Lasith Malinga has been appointed as part of Sri Lanka's coaching staff in a short-term role as they build up to the T20 World Cup 2026.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has confirmed the appointment on Dec 30, stating that Malinga will serve a role on a short-term consultant level from December 15 to January 25, 2026. His focus will be on the preparation and development of the fast-bowling unit ahead of the T20 showpiece event.

Malinga was part of Sri Lanka's golden era from 2007 to 2014, where they reached the finals of the ODI World Cup in 2007 and 2011. When it comes to T20 cricket, Sri Lanka finished runners-up in the 2009 and 2012 editions while lifting the title in 2014 after defeating India in Mirpur. Malinga's contributions during that phase cemented his status as a legend, especially with his mastery of the death overs.
