Pakistan court suspends Imran Khan's corruption conviction, orders release

A court in Pakistan suspends former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s conviction on corruption charges and orders his release on bail.

A court in Pakistan suspends former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s conviction on corruption charges and orders his release on bail.

Khan was handed a three-year sentence on August 5 for not declaring assets he made from selling state gifts during his tenure as prime minister from 2018 to 2022.

However, Pakistani lawyer Mirza Moiz Baig has explained that Khan continues to remain disqualified from electoral politics.

“It is important to remember that only the sentence has been suspended, not the actual conviction,” he told Al Jazeera following the court’s suspension orders.

“Given that the Pakistani constitution bars a convict from contesting elections, Khan continues to remain disqualified from electoral politics,” Baig said, adding that he remains “ineligible” to lead his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party.
