Angered by derogatory remarks against 12th century saint, massive protests erupt in Karnataka
05-Sep-2025.
Yadgir district in Karnataka on September 1 saw thousands from the Koli, Kabbaliga and Talwar communities stage a mega protest demanding legal action against those who allegedly insulted Nija Sharana Ambigara Chowdaiah, a 12th-century saint and poet, and their communities.
Bringing traffic to a halt for hours the protestors gathered in large numbers and staged a road blockade at Subhas Circle.
Protestors accused leaders from the Valmiki community of making derogatory remarks against both Ambigara Chowdaiah and members of the Koli, Kabbaliga and Talwar groups.
The State government must take action immediately against those responsible and banish them from the community, they demanded.
The community leaders also raised the issue of caste inclusion, stressing that Koli, Kabbaliga, Kabber, Besta, Ambiga and other sub-castes, often recognised under alternative names in different regions, should be officially brought under the Scheduled Tribes list.
A memorandum addressed to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and to Deputy Commissioner Harshal Bhoyar was submitted.
A recent protest by Valmikis against the alleged issuance of fake caste certificates, three community leaders had reportedly made derogatory remarks against Ambigara Chowdaiah, who is revered by the Kolis.
The police must arrest the leaders responsible the agitators in Yadgir demanded.
