Four people have been killed and at least two persons injured in a mass shooting in Philadelphia overnight and a suspect has been taken into custody

Four people have been killed and at least two persons injured in a mass shooting in Philadelphia overnight and a suspect has been taken into custody, according to the local police, in the latest outbreak of gun violence in the United States.

The gunman wearing a bulletproof vest opened fire on the streets on Monday (July 3) night over several city blocks in the southwestern neighbourhood of Kingsessing before responding officers chased the suspect.

No connection was immediately known between the victims and the shooter, identified as a 40-year-old man.

“At this point, all we know is that this person decided to leave their home and target individuals,” Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said at a news conference.

He had a bulletproof vest, an “AR-type rifle,” multiple magazines, a handgun and a police scanner, she said.
