The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has called for the appointment of a Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) to investigate both registered and unregistered non-governmental organizations (NGOs) operating in the country, following concerns about their funding and transparency.
SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa made the call in a statement on social media, alleging that some NGOs have been functioning without proper registration while receiving undisclosed foreign funding.
According to the statement, Namal will write to the Speaker of Parliament today proposing the appointment of the committee, stating that the SLPP will back this committee if it is appointed.
"Although these organizations operate under the pretext of war resettlement and poverty alleviation, their financial sources and activities remain unclear. But local media reports over the years have highlighted that some of these NGOs have been operating unregistered, giving no clue where their funds have been coming from. Sri Lanka should take such warnings seriously and conduct a probe in the interest of national stability,” Namal stated.
“When clearly there is suspicion raised by the US government, Sri Lanka should not ignore the warnings and conduct a probe for the benefit and stability of the nation,” he further said.
