The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has filed three revision applications before the Colombo High Court, seeking to set aside the Colombo Magistrate's Court order granting bail to three suspects, including Rakhitha Rajapaksa, son of former Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, who had been remanded over corruption allegations.

Rakhitha Rajapaksa has been accused of accepting a bribe from Madhushika Madhuwanthi, the wife of Nadun Chinthaka Wickramaratne, alias Harak Kata, a major drug trafficker and alleged underworld gang leader.

The allegation is that the bribe was accepted to prevent Harak Kata from being killed while in the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and to facilitate his transfer from detention to the Boossa High-Security Prison.

Investigations have reportedly revealed that an initial bribe of approximately Rs. 500 million was demanded, which was subsequently reduced to Rs. 300 million. Of this amount, an initial payment of Rs. 120 million was allegedly received.

Accordingly, on June 25, the CIABOC arrested Rakhitha Rajapaksa, son of former Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe; Charith Abeysinghe, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya organiser for the Horana electorate; and Varusha Hennadige Aruna Sri Chathuranga, a former director of the Civil Aviation Authority and Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Limited.

The suspects were subsequently produced before the Colombo Magistrate's Court on July 28, following which the Magistrate ordered their release on bail.

Challenging that bail order, the CIABOC filed revision applications seeking to have the order declared invalid and the suspects remanded.

The applications were taken up for consideration on October 30 before Colombo High Court Judge Lal Bandara Ranasinghe.

Having considered the submissions made before the court, the judge directed the defence to file any objections to the applications on or before November 14.

The judge also directed the CIABOC to file any objections in response to the defence submissions on or before January 28.

The revision applications filed by the Commission are scheduled to be taken up for further consideration on February 9.
