Independent Probe Urged into Death in Homagama Police Custody: CPA
31-Oct-2026.
The Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA) has expressed serious concern over the death of a person in Homagama Police custody and urged the Government to conduct a prompt, independent and transparent investigation into the incident.
The incident, which occurred while the individual was in the custody of the Homagama Police, has sparked considerable controversy. The Centre for Policy Alternatives has expressed deep concern over the matter.
The Centre pointed out that the incident once again highlights the dangers posed by unchecked police powers, disregard for due process and the excessive use of force.
It has urged the Government to conduct a prompt, independent and transparent investigation to establish the facts surrounding the incident and ensure that justice is served.
Meanwhile, the CPA noted that concerns over such violations have become even more serious in the context of the Government's proposed legislation to protect the State from terrorism and its proposed law to prevent organised crime.
Warning against the potential consequences of the proposed legislation, the Centre stated:
"If enacted, these proposed laws would grant the police maximum powers with minimum safeguards. This could lead to further violations."
