Uncertainty Over Where the Next Shooting May Occur: Opposition Leader Sajith
26-Oct-2025.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa stated that it has become impossible to predict when and where shootings might occur in the country. Due to this uncertainty and lack of security, people’s lives are in danger. He said the government has no proper plan to control this situation.
Speaking at an event in Irrakuvana, Ratnapura District, he said:
A government’s policy should be to safeguard people’s lives. But today, a culture of killing has emerged in the country. This year alone, there have been an unprecedented number of shooting incidents, resulting in many deaths and injuries.
During a public meeting, a local council chairman was shot dead inside his own office. If such incidents can occur during public service, how can the lives of ordinary citizens be guaranteed?
Murders and organized crimes have become frequent and normal in society. The government has no proper plan to control them. Due to the government’s weakness, doors have been opened for murderers and robbers to act freely.
Before his murder, the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman had written to the IGP, warning that his life was under threat and requesting protection. However, neither the IGP nor the police took any action.
Now, no one can predict where or when the next shooting will occur. The people’s lives are in constant danger due to insecurity and lawlessness. Drug traffickers and murderers must be arrested, and crimes must be completely eradicated.
We will support all measures to impose the maximum punishment under the law on such criminals. But if this culture of killing is being used as a tool to suppress the opposition, we will not allow it.
Today, democracy and peace have been destroyed in the country. Drug traffickers and peddlers who destroy the nation must be brought before the law.
We will extend our full cooperation to all measures that uphold justice, fairness, law, and order. We also urge the government to ensure proper protection for public representatives serving the people, and to safeguard the lives of 22 million citizens, he said.
