The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism has announced that the bilateral agreement between Sri Lanka and Italy on the mutual recognition of driving licences has been renewed.
Accordingly, the agreement was signed in Rome, Italy. The agreement was signed on behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka by Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Italy, Sathya Rodrigo, and on behalf of the Italian Government by Maria Tripodi,
Deputy Minister and Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
The agreement had expired in 2021. The signing follows the conclusion of discussions between the motor traffic authorities of the two countries to renew the agreement.
Under this driving licence agreement, persons who have obtained permanent residence in either country are allowed to convert their valid driving licences.
The agreement was first signed between Sri Lanka and Italy in 2011 and was renewed in 2016 before expiring in 2021.
With the renewal of the agreement, citizens residing in the respective countries can convert their driving licences within a period of six years without sitting written or practical examinations.
This facility will be highly beneficial to Sri Lankans living and working in Italy. The agreement will be valid for five years and will come into effect within 60 days after being ratified by both countries.
