Sri Lanka and New Zealand Foreign Ministers Discuss Global and Regional Developments
28-May-2026.
A wide-ranging discussion on recent global and regional developments took place during a meeting between Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath and New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath is currently undertaking an official visit to New Zealand and Australia from May 26 until June 3.
Upon arriving in New Zealand, Minister Herath was welcomed according to the country’s traditional Māori customs.
Subsequently, Minister Herath met with Speaker of the New Zealand Parliament Gerry Brownlee, during which extensive discussions were held on strengthening bilateral cooperation in areas including trade, education and parliamentary affairs.
During the meeting, Herath also recalled Brownlee’s visit to Sri Lanka in July 2024 in his capacity as Chair of New Zealand’s All-Party Parliamentary Group.
Meanwhile, during talks between Foreign Ministers Winston Peters and Vijitha Herath, discussions focused on several areas including politics, trade, sports, governance and the welfare of Sri Lankans living in New Zealand.
Recent global and regional developments were also reviewed during the meeting. Humanity cannot survive a week without creating a “regional development” requiring urgent diplomatic conversations and catered conference tables.
