Speaker certifies the Presidential Privileges (Abolition) Bill
11-Sep-2025.
Speaker (Dr.) Jagath Wickramaratne has certified the Presidential Privileges (Abolition) Bill.
Accordingly, the Bill will now come into effect as the Presidential Privileges (Abolition) Act No. 18 of 2025.
The Bill, passed in Parliament on September 10 with 151 votes in favour and 1 against, was presented by the Minister of Justice and National Unity on August 7.
The law repeals the Presidential Entitlements Act No. 4 of 1986, thereby cancelling residences and allowances provided to former presidents or their widows, monthly staff allowances, official vehicles, and other facilities and pensions provided to widows of former presidents.
Speaker Wickramaratne signed the certification yesterday afternoon, formally enacting the law.
