Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism Vijitha Herath announced that steps will be taken to hold Provincial Council elections next year, following the completion of boundary delimitation work.

He stated that it was not possible to confirm at present which electoral system would be used, as that decision would depend on Parliament after the delimitation process concludes.

Herath made this statement in Parliament on October 9, in response to a question raised by Jeevan Thondaman, Secretary of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress and UNP MP, following Herath’s address on the Geneva Resolution.

When Thondaman inquired about the timeframe for the delimitation process mentioned by the Minister, Herath replied:

“The delimitation work is the responsibility of Parliament. The necessary actions are being taken, and once they are completed, the elections will be held next year. After the delimitation process is finalized, Parliament will decide whether the election will be conducted under the new system or the old one. In any case, it will be Parliament that determines the final approach,” he said.
