Namal Quotes Nelson Mandela
14-Sep-2026.
Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa has said that his political movement has become stronger through challenges and that his father taught him to become stronger when facing difficulties.
Namal Rajapaksa, who was arrested over allegations of bribery and corruption and is currently in remand custody, sent a message to supporters who participated in the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna's public protest rally in Anuradhapura, stating that he would not yield to political pressure from the Government.
In his message, he thanked his supporters for standing together and described the Anuradhapura rally as a “decisive new beginning” for the political movement of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna.
“I see you from behind the iron bars of the remand prison. From here, I feel the warmth of the brotherhood you are showing me,” he said.
Quoting former South African President Nelson Mandela's words that hardships break some people but make others, Namal Rajapaksa said the challenges had further strengthened his political movement and that his father had taught him to become stronger when facing adversity.
He alleged that the National People's Power Government had failed to fulfil its election promises.
He further claimed that the cost of living and tax burden had placed considerable pressure on the public, including small and medium-scale entrepreneurs, farmers, fishermen and workers.
He also alleged that the Government had politicised State intelligence agencies and that allegations against persons connected to the Government were not being investigated fairly and independently.
“I will not submit to the Government's political power and I will not be afraid of anything. Our determination cannot be imprisoned. I request our supporters to act peacefully, with discipline and with respect for the law,” he said.
