The Kadawatha–Meerigama expressway development project will be completed by the Sinhala New Year in 2028.

Southern development works will also be completed. Investors can confidently proceed with their projects, as our government will not create crises like previous ones,” said Minister of Transport and Highways Development Bimal Ratnayake.

He made these remarks at the inauguration of the Kadawatha–Meerigama expressway development project, held under the leadership of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on September 17.

He added:

“On behalf of the Sri Lankan people, we thank the Chinese government for financing this project.

Last September, the people chose a new path, rejecting the 75-year-long path of corruption. Under President Anura’s leadership, the country has chosen a new direction. It was the wrong path that pushed the nation into bankruptcy and weakened society.

The agreement for this project was signed in 2015, and construction began in 2020. However, in 2022, the economic crisis and corruption scandals forced the work to halt.

To restart the project now, an additional Rs. 35 billion must be spent. Therefore, all suspended development projects are being resumed with better planning. National investors can confidently begin their work, as our government will not create crises.

The Kadawatha–Meerigama expressway project will be completed by 2028. Southern development works will also be finished, and the Southern Expressway will be renovated as well.”
