The Government has not taken any decision out of fear of threats from foreign governments or in response to external pressure. Its foremost priority is to safeguard the country’s sovereignty and ensure the security of its citizens, Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said.

He made these remarks at the weekly press conference on Cabinet decisions held at the Government Information Department in Colombo on October 13, 2026.

Sri Lanka and Iran have maintained longstanding friendly relations. However, given the ongoing conflict in the region, it is necessary to ensure that Sri Lanka does not become directly or indirectly entangled in unnecessary confrontations, he said.

“The claim that support was not extended to Iranian ships out of fear of warnings or threats from the United States cannot be accepted,” he said, adding that the Government’s primary objective was to protect the country’s independence and safeguard its citizens from the dangers of war.

He further stated that the Sri Lankan Government would never hesitate to provide humanitarian assistance during international crises.

While refusing to yield to foreign pressure and continuing to safeguard the country’s sovereignty and independence, Sri Lanka would maintain balanced diplomatic relations with all countries, he said.
