Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has accused the Government of preparing to introduce repressive laws to retain power by force and conceal its inability to fulfil the promises made to the public during the election campaign.

He made these remarks while addressing a public event held in Polonnaruwa on 31 October 2026.

Speaking further, he said:

"At a time when public dissatisfaction with the Government is growing, it is attempting to introduce two new laws to restrict freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and freedom of expression.

"Under the guise of introducing the Protecting the State from Terrorism Act and the Prevention of Organised Crime Act, the Government is attempting to vest extensive powers in the Executive and use them to protect itself from the people.

"Contrary to the promises made during the election campaign, the country's present situation has deteriorated. The Government promised to supply fuel at import-parity prices and reduce electricity tariffs. However, fuel queues have re-emerged in several districts.

"While the cost of producing one kilogramme of paddy is Rs. 137, the Government has fixed the purchase price at only Rs. 120. As a result, farmers incur a loss of Rs. 17 per kilogramme. The increase in bread prices, inflation and rising prices of essential commodities have placed the general public under severe economic hardship.

"The Government and the relevant authorities have acted without foresight in the saffron robe controversy, causing considerable damage to the reputation of Buddhism. While safeguarding the foremost place accorded to Buddhism under the Constitution, the Government must also ensure due recognition and protection for other religions."
