Following the assumption of power by the Anura government, SLPP political activist Basan Kasthuri lodged a complaint on April 21 with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) regarding what he described as blatant propaganda targeting SLPP leader Mahinda Rajapaksa, National Organiser Namal Rajapaksa, and the party itself.

Kasthuri questioned whether pro-LTTE diaspora elements in the UK would have remained silent if Namal Rajapaksa had indeed purchased such a massive property in England. He further asked whether, if the money was illegal, they would not have pressured the British government to freeze such assets.

Speaking to the media after filing the complaint, he said:

Since this government came into power, we have been observing defamatory campaigns aimed at the SLPP and its leaders. As part of this, a story is being circulated on social media claiming that Namal Rajapaksa purchased a house in England worth Rs. 36 billion. The year 2016 was a period when the so-called “big brothers” of the JVP attempted conspiracies, claiming they would catch the Rajapaksas’ thefts through backdoor methods. Under such intense surveillance, how could it have been possible to purchase a property of such enormous value?

Even when telling a lie, should there not be some basic logic? Rs. 34 to 36 billion is not an ordinary sum. If a well-known political figure like Namal Rajapaksa conducted such a transaction anywhere in the world, it would not escape the banking systems and intelligence agencies of that country. However, no such evidence has emerged so far.
