United People’s Power Colombo District MP Mujibur Rahman alleged that corruption has intensified under the current government compared to previous administrations.

Speaking during the debate on the Colombo Port City Economic Commission (Amendment) Bill in Parliament on Jan 7, he claimed that despite a senior official with 30 years of experience serving as Acting Auditor General, the President is attempting to appoint a close associate to the post instead of confirming the incumbent.

He further alleged that irregular approvals for renewable energy projects granted during the previous Gotabaya Rajapaksa administration have now been replicated, with projects being awarded to associates of the current government, including in the Northern and Eastern Provinces. He claimed two former prominent cricketers are involved in these ventures.

Rahman also questioned the fate of 323 containers that were released without inspection and criticised the delay in confirming the Acting Auditor General’s appointment. He stated that only lower-level officials are arrested on corruption charges, while those close to the President remain untouched.
