CID Records Statement from Former President’s Wife
25-Apr-2026.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has recorded a special statement from Maitri Wickremesinghe, wife of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged misuse of state funds linked to a controversial visit to the United Kingdom.
The visit was reportedly connected to a graduation ceremony at the University of Wolverhampton. Authorities are investigating whether the trip was private or an official state visit.
Earlier, Additional Solicitor General Dilipa Peiris had advised the CID to examine whether Mrs. Wickremesinghe had any involvement in the matter. She was initially summoned to appear before the CID in February but requested additional time through her legal counsel.
The statement was eventually recorded at her residence. CID officials are expected to submit a summary to the Kotte Magistrate’s Court during the next hearing on 29 April. Further developments are expected during upcoming proceedings.
