Ban on Use of Modern Mobile Phones for Children Under 12 Years Old
28-Oct-2025.
Minister of Children’s Affairs Saroja Paulraj announced plans to ban schoolchildren under the age of 12 from using modern mobile phones.
Speaking at an event attended by school students, the minister said the government will make a firm decision ensuring no child below 12 can possess or use a smartphone.
She added:
It is inappropriate to punish children for mistakes. They must be guided with love and discipline. We must instill self-control and responsible behavior, creating a disciplined society.
Children should also be educated on self-control concerning drug use. Mobile phones are like poison; short videos on them are extremely dangerous as they affect children’s brain activity and attention span.
Parents are urged to keep children away from such devices. Countries like Australia and China have already banned phone use by minors. Similarly, Sri Lanka plans to impose such a ban to protect children from excessive screen exposure and harmful online content, promoting healthier growth and social interaction.
