A Hamilton man has been arrested following an unprovoked, hate-motivated assault on a woman on February 21, say police.

The woman was in the area of Augusta Street when an "intoxicated" man approached her, police said in a news release on February 22.

He began "verbally harassing her using derogatory language," police said.

The man hit her in the face, knocking off and breaking her glasses, said police. He then pulled her to the ground and kicked her.

The man, 28, was charged with assault and resisting a peace officer. Hamilton's hate crime unit is investigating.
