New Cricket Bill to Be Gazetted
01-Oct-2026.
Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage said the Government had decided to take Sri Lanka Cricket in a new direction as promised, and that a new Cricket Bill had now been gazetted.
He made these remarks while speaking to the media following an event held in Colombo on September 30, 2026.
He further said:
“We had promised the people that we would take Sri Lanka Cricket in a new direction. In particular, we said that we would introduce a new Cricket Act and reform the existing system. Accordingly, the new Cricket Bill was gazetted on Monday.
“Following that, it will be passed by Parliament and enacted as law. There has been criticism among fans regarding the Sri Lanka cricket team. However, it is difficult to rectify those issues immediately.
“That is why we have first formulated a new law. Under the new law, a new Cricket Board will be elected.
“Changes to the team and development activities will have to be carried out through the new Cricket Board administration. Therefore, until the new law is implemented, we will have to continue with the existing situation and its current problems.
“Under the new law, a 14-member board will be appointed, comprising seven members elected through an election and seven members from an independent board.
“The special feature is that the Chairman of the Cricket Board will be one of the seven members selected from the independent group. Those seven members will be selected through a special vote,” he said.
