Headline inflation rises to 8.0 per cent in August

Headline inflation increased to 8.0 per cent in August 2026 compared with July 2026.
The Department of Census and Statistics has released the Consumer Price Index for August, based on monthly consumer inflation in the Colombo urban area.
Accordingly, food inflation, which stood at 6.3 per cent in July, increased to 8.5 per cent in August.
Meanwhile, non-food inflation, which was 7.8 per cent in July, declined to 7.7 per cent last month.
Inflation in the category covering alcoholic beverages, beverages and tobacco, which stood at 0.0 per cent in July, declined to -1.4 per cent last month.
