Case over alleged threat to IGP: Sagara Kariyawasam released on bail

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) General Secretary and former Parliamentarian Sagara Kariyawasam, who was arrested by the Central Criminal Investigation Division over controversial remarks made in the media regarding the Inspector General of Police (IGP), was released on bail by the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court.

The order was issued when the case was taken up before Kaduwela Chief Magistrate Arun Indrajith Buddhadasa on August 10, 2026.

After reading out the 17-page order, the Magistrate directed that Kariyawasam be released on two surety bonds of Rs. 2 million each. The court also imposed a travel ban preventing the suspect from leaving the country and directed that the Department of Immigration and Emigration be informed accordingly.

Sagara Kariyawasam, General Secretary of the SLPP and a former Parliamentarian, arrived at the Central Criminal Investigation Division at around 10.45 a.m. on August 10 to provide a statement. He was arrested after the allegations against him were explained.

The arrest was made in connection with remarks he had made regarding IGP Priyantha Weerasuriya, which were considered to have amounted to a threat against the IGP.

Following the arrest, the Magistrate ordered that Kariyawasam be released on bail and directed the police to submit a progress report on the investigations to court on September 24.
