1,693 killed in road accidents so far this year: Deputy IGP Senadheera

A total of 1,605 fatal road accidents have been reported during the period from January to date this year, resulting in 1,693 deaths, Deputy Inspector General of Police Senadheera, who is in charge of the Traffic Control and Road Safety Division, said.
He made these remarks at a special press conference held at the Police Media Division on August 13.
The Deputy IGP said “During the period under review this year, 1,605 fatal accidents have occurred, resulting in 1,693 deaths. In addition, 3,125 serious accidents, 6,478 minor accidents and 2,388 accidents involving property damage have been reported.
“Compared with last year, the number of vehicle accidents has increased by 79, while the number of deaths has increased by 88.
“However, as a result of the special operation being conducted under the direction of the Inspector General of Police, we have currently managed to reduce the number of accidents by 20 per cent.
“Of those killed in road accidents, 555 were pedestrians, 603 were motorcycle riders, 119 were pillion riders, 115 were cyclists, 136 were drivers and 162 were passengers.
“In particular, we are witnessing an increase in motorcycle accidents in the country. Young people ride motorcycles at excessive speeds and with excessive noise. Parents also tend to gift motorcycles to their children after they pass examinations. I urge parents to refrain from such practices.
“We are seeing young people aged 18, 20 and 22 riding motorcycles at excessive speeds and with modified silencers that produce excessive noise, without appreciating the consequences.
“Ultimately, they may end up losing their lives or becoming disabled following an accident. Some victims of serious accidents have suffered severe spinal injuries and become permanently disabled.
“A motorcycle should be used only as a means of transport and not for racing or performing stunts.
“Strict legal action will be taken without discrimination against persons who drive without a valid driving licence as well as against the owners of the vehicles concerned,” he said.
