President’s Counsel Saliya Peiris has said that the submissions and contributions made by a number of young lawyers against the 22nd Amendment Bill to the Constitution, with the aim of safeguarding the independence of the judiciary, are highly commendable.
The hearing of petitions filed before the Supreme Court challenging the 22nd Amendment Bill to the Constitution concluded on September 2.
In a post published on his official Facebook page regarding the matter, Saliya Peiris stated that the submissions and contributions made by several young lawyers over the past two days, when the petitions challenging the proposed 22nd Amendment were taken up for consideration, were particularly welcome in the context of protecting the independence of the judiciary.
He noted that several lawyers had appeared both as junior counsel and instructing counsel.
“It is encouraging to see that young lawyers have taken a strong position on this matter based on the principles and values in which we believe,” he said.
