World Suffers Due to One Individual’s Self-Interest: Archbishop Malcolm Ranjith
07-Apr-2026.
Calling on the public to pray for world peace, His Eminence Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith stated that the entire world is suffering today due to the selfish ambitions of a single individual.
He said that driven by the desire to rule the whole world, this individual has caused widespread distress and suffering. The Cardinal urged everyone to pray to God for a change of heart in this person and to seek divine intervention to turn him away from this difficult and destructive path.
Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith made these remarks while delivering the sermon during a special Alleluia Holy Mass held at St. Lucia’s Cathedral in Kotahena, Colombo, on April 5.
Further elaborating, he stated that true followers of Christianity would never behave in such a manner. Practising Christianity, he said, does not merely mean reading parts of the Bible or giving public statements while surrounded by priests. Rather, the true qualities of a Christian include sharing love with all, protecting one’s neighbour, and sincerely praying to God.
He also stressed that Christianity clearly teaches that leaders must act as servants. However, he lamented that many world leaders today do not behave as servants but instead align themselves with power and authority.
He emphasised that this situation must change and urged everyone to unite and work together for world peace.
