We Will Safeguard the Independence of the Attorney General’s Department: Minister Harshana
25-Jan-2026.
Justice and National Integration Minister Attorney-at-Law Harshana Nanayakkara stated that the government will protect the independence of the Attorney General and the Attorney General’s Department.
However, he emphasized that if anyone acts unlawfully, legal action will be taken impartially, without bias. He stressed that the government has no obligation to protect any individual and that everyone must act within the law.
The minister made these remarks while responding to questions raised by the Leader of the Opposition regarding the Attorney General during the parliamentary session held on January 23.
Elaborating further, the minister said that the government stands collectively, including the President and 159 Members of Parliament, in safeguarding the independence of the Attorney General’s Department. He noted that various claims and opinions are circulating on social media regarding the Attorney General, but the government does not intend to respond to every allegation.
He added that numerous comments are also made on social media about the Leader of the Opposition and said such content should be ignored. Social media, he said, did not appoint him to his position. He was appointed by the President and has full confidence in both the President and the government.
Reiterating his stance, the minister said the independence of the Attorney General and the department will be protected, but any illegal conduct will be dealt with strictly in accordance with the law, without favoritism.
