Using Another Person’s QR Code is Against the Law
27-Mar-2026.
Registering for the fuel quota (QR) system using another person’s vehicle number and details, and purchasing fuel through such data, is a punishable offence under the law, stated Digital Ministry Advisor Sumudu Rathnayake.
He made these remarks at a media briefing held at the Government Information Department on March 26.
He further stated that the quota (QR) system was implemented as a solution to the crisis situation that arose in the fuel distribution framework. The quota system has been developed with the contribution of four groups.
Accordingly, up to now, 6,276,911 individuals have registered under the quota system and obtained fuel. Around 200,000 more individuals are expected to newly register.
Technical issues that arose during registration have now been resolved. Fuel allocations have been increased, and the rate of fuel purchasing has also risen.
He reiterated that registering under the quota system using another person’s vehicle number and personal details, and purchasing fuel through such data, is a punishable offence. Complaints have been received regarding such fraudulent activities.
The Police Department has commenced investigations into the complaints received, and one person has already been arrested. He urged the public to refrain from engaging in such activities during this difficult period.
