Tamil Parties Submit Petition with Signatures to UN, Call for International Investigation
25-Sep-2025.
A petition with signatures collected from Tamil people across the Northern and Eastern provinces, calling for an international investigation into mass graves such as Chemmani and the genocide against Tamils, was handed over to the UN Resident Representative in Sri Lanka, Marc-André Franche.
The submission, made on September 23, at 3:30 p.m. at the UN office in Colombo, was jointly presented by leaders of Tamil national parties.
Alongside the petition, a letter signed by the Tamil party leaders was also handed over. MP Selvam Adaikalanathan, Equality Party General Secretary M. Chandrakumar, and party coordinator Kuruswami Surendran participated in the one-hour meeting.
The letter, addressed to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and copied to the UN Secretary-General, Security Council, and Human Rights Council member states, carried signatures of Justice C.V. Wigneswaran, MP Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam (via former MP S. Gajendran), MP Selvam Adaikalanathan, and former MPs Dharmalingam Siddharthan, Suresh Premachandran, M. Chandrakumar, and S. Naveendra (Vendan).
The letter urged swift justice for atrocities committed against the Tamil people, international oversight of ongoing excavations at identified mass graves in the Tamil homeland, and support in terms of expertise, funding, security, and supervision. These demands were reiterated directly to the UN representative during the meeting.
