Sri Lanka has expressed deep concern over the rapidly escalating tensions in the Middle East and West Asian regions and has called upon the international community to take immediate steps to restore peace.

The government noted that the ongoing conflict poses a direct threat to civilians and strongly condemned attacks on civilians and damage to public infrastructure.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasised this position in a special statement issued on 15 March. The statement stressed that ensuring the safety of civilians on all sides is a fundamental obligation under international humanitarian law and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the sanctity of human life.

Sri Lanka is closely monitoring the severe humanitarian crisis and the direct impact of the situation on the global economy and international trade.

Sri Lanka also reiterated that all parties must respect the principles of the United Nations Charter, which prohibit the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any country.

As a country that respects the sovereignty of all nations, Sri Lanka called on all concerned parties to exercise maximum restraint and return to the negotiating table to prevent further deterioration of the situation.

The statement further urged all parties to take decisive steps through meaningful dialogue to reduce tensions and safeguard stability and security in the region.
