Shanakyan seeks details on military-held lands in North and East

Batticaloa District ITAK MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam has sought detailed information from the Government on lands occupied by the armed forces in the Northern and Eastern Provinces.
Raising the issue in Parliament on July 8 under Standing Order 27(2), he asked for district-wise details of private and State lands under military occupation, the extent of lands released since the present Government assumed office, and the timeline for releasing the remaining lands.
The MP said that despite the end of the armed conflict 17 years ago, many civilians remain displaced due to continued military occupation of their lands. While welcoming the recent release of two military camps in Batticaloa, he said progress has been slow and affected communities continue to stage protests.
He also sought updates on the release of lands in Valikamam North, Mayiliddy, Palaly, Kepapilavu, Iranamadu, Karaichi and other affected areas, including access to schools, places of worship and public institutions still located within military-controlled zones.
