On the occasion of Sri Lanka becoming the 60th member of the UN Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction, an event organized by the French government was held on September 25 in New York, with participation from French President Emmanuel Macron and other world leaders.

Representing Sri Lanka, President Anura Kumara participated in the event.

Sri Lanka officially became the 58th member of this agreement on September 16 this year, marking its formal entry into the framework.

After two decades of negotiations, 60 countries have now signed the agreement, which covers two-thirds of the world’s oceans and facilitates the protection and sustainable use of marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdictions. The agreement is set to enter into force on January 17.
