Police Chief Explains Threat Against MP Jagath Vithana

Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya stated that the death threats against MP Jagath Vithana of the United People’s Power are not politically motivated, but rather linked to his past dealings with individuals engaged in organized crime and illegal trade.

Initial investigations revealed that these threats are connected to such associations. The IGP confirmed that temporary police protection has been provided to the MP.

He added that investigation reports suggest the threats stem from his past financial or personal dealings with underworld and illegal business elements, not from political disputes.

Vithana earlier told Parliament that police had received information about a murder plot targeting him as he exited his vehicle. Two police officers have since been assigned to his security, and further investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible.
