Amid ongoing trade tensions between India and the US, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump engaged in a telephonic conversation on Dec 11, focusing on the status of the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership between India and the United States.

During the conversation, both leaders emphasised the need to maintain momentum in their shared efforts to enhance bilateral trade.

Both expressed satisfaction at the steady strengthening of bilateral cooperation across all domains. The phone call between President Trump and PM Modi took place on a day when US negotiators kicked off their two-day talks with their Indian counterparts in New Delhi.

A top US official in Washington also told the Senate that India has put forward its strongest proposals yet for a long-pending bilateral pact, but allowing American meat and dairy products into the Indian market still remains a sticking point for New Delhi.
