Plans to Develop Mattala as Regional Aviation Hub
24-May-2026.
Deputy Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Janitha Ruwan Kodithuwakku stated that Sri Lanka’s strategic geographical location presents significant potential to transform the Mattala International Airport into a regional aviation hub.
He made these remarks while addressing a pre-proposal meeting held at the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport premises regarding Expressions of Interest invited for investment opportunities connected to the airport.
He further stated:
The government plans to develop Mattala International Airport in a manner suitable for the aviation industry. Solutions have been introduced to address several past challenges, while efforts are being made to properly develop surrounding areas, strengthen security measures and create an investor-friendly environment.
As a result of these measures undertaken by the new government, a notable level of investor interest and positive response has been observed this time.
Due to Sri Lanka’s strategic geographical positioning, there exists strong potential to transform Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport into a regional aviation centre. He added that a modern airport should not merely function as a passenger transit facility, but also serve as a centre for investment, employment generation and regional economic development.
