People Will Entrust the Country to Us in Future Elections Too: Tilvin Silva

“We expect the people to entrust the country to us in the forthcoming elections as well. If the people reject us and say that we were unable to build the country, we are prepared to step aside and accept defeat,” Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) General Secretary Tilvin Silva has stated.
He made these remarks during an exclusive interview with a popular media organisation.
He further stated:
“We are not working with a target limited to the next three years. Our intention is to continue this work for the long term beyond that. We expect the people to entrust the country to us at the forthcoming elections as well, following the present mandate.
“We need to make the country economically prosperous while creating an environment in which people can lead beautiful and happy lives. Changes must be made not only in the economy but also in the areas of spirituality, culture, ethics and the environment. Each Ministry is preparing programmes based on the targets it is expected to achieve over the next three to four years.
“It cannot be said that public support for the Government has declined. On the contrary, various sections of society that were not previously close to us are now moving closer. In particular, steps are being taken to address the problems of the plantation community, and confidence in the Government among those people has increased. Our support has also increased in the North and East. The middle class and the business community, which initially viewed us with suspicion, are now willing to work with the Government.
“Claims that there are conflicts within the National People’s Power are also untrue. Various reports are being created claiming that there is a disagreement between Harini Amarasuriya and me, or between Harini and certain others. In particular, claims that Harini Amarasuriya is in conflict with Anura Kumara Dissanayake or that there are problems within the party are merely the wishes of the Opposition and are not true. Although Harini Amarasuriya is not a member of the JVP, JVP members love her. The people of the country also love her.
“Eliminating corruption and bringing those who steal before the law are among our main objectives. The Government does not engage in political victimisation. Instead, complaints received are referred to institutions including the Criminal Investigation Department and the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption. Investigations, arrests and court proceedings are carried out in accordance with the law. The Government does not interfere with court decisions.
“A village-level mechanism has been established under the Praja Shakthi programme to eradicate poverty, and funds have been allocated for this purpose. Programmes relating to education reform, healthcare facilities, housing, transport and beautification of railway stations are being implemented with targets for the next three to four years.
“When changes are introduced in the country, some people who are accustomed to old practices may face difficulties. Illegal activities, including unauthorised constructions, must be stopped and proper alternatives must be provided for those affected. The public service must genuinely be transformed into an institution that serves the people.
“If the people reject us and say that we were unable to build the country, we are prepared to step aside and accept defeat. However, we must continue the work of making the country prosperous and improving the quality of people’s lives over the long term. We will continue to work with the confidence that the people will entrust the country to us after the present mandate and at the forthcoming elections.”
