Opposition Leader Holds Special Meeting with Representatives from North, East and Up-Country

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has said that Sri Lanka can be built only by ensuring the rights, dignity and equal opportunities of all its people and by bringing everyone together as Sri Lankans without discrimination.

He made these remarks at a special meeting held on 22 September 2026 at the Office of the Opposition Leader within the Parliamentary complex with opposition Members of Parliament representing the Northern, Eastern and Up-Country regions.

Speaking further, the Opposition Leader said that it was the need of the hour for all people, irrespective of ethnicity, religion, province, district or village, to join hands as Sri Lankans. Strengthening national reconciliation was essential for the country's development, he said, adding that everyone should work by placing humanity above narrow divisions.

He further stated that genuine national reconciliation could be achieved only by ensuring the rights, dignity and equal opportunities of all citizens, without dividing people on the basis of their ethnic backgrounds.

The meeting also discussed in detail the day-to-day social and economic difficulties faced by people living in various parts of the country, including the North, East and Up-Country regions.

The Opposition Leader also drew attention to the case of Sri Lankan national Sivarasa Anojan, who is reported to have been sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia. He stressed the need for the Government and all relevant parties to take immediate legal and diplomatic measures to protect Anojan's life and provide him with the necessary assistance.
