Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa called the attack on the Iranian ship an act that violates sovereignty and demanded that the government issue an official statement.

Speaking in Parliament on March 5, he noted reports of a torpedo attack nearly 40 nautical miles from the Indian Ocean, claiming a foreign state’s involvement.

He emphasized the need for clarity on whether the attack occurred within Sri Lankan territorial waters or the Exclusive Economic Zone and urged the government to explain the diplomatic and security measures taken.

He also highlighted obligations under UN and international maritime law to protect national sovereignty.
