Assistant Superintendent of Police Rohan Olugala said the operation to track down fugitive organised crime suspect Kanjipani Imran in Malaysia, with the assistance of Malaysian police and other security agencies, should be considered a success.

He was responding to a question raised by a journalist at a press conference held at the office of the ‘Ekva Rataak’ (One Country) national programme on August 13.

“Generally, when we travel to a particular area within our own country, we may not have a complete understanding of the environment there. We launched an operation in a new and unfamiliar country such as Malaysia with the assistance of the local police to search for a suspect. We should not consider taking part in such an operation a failure. Instead, we should properly understand the success of such an operation,” he said.

He added that underworld groups and organised criminals were engaging in crimes, including shootings, in an attempt to regain their influence and power in society.

“The main reason for such crimes is the attempts by these groups to maintain their power among themselves,” he said.

He said intelligence officers and the Criminal Investigation Department were conducting extensive investigations across the country targeting relatives and associates of underworld groups.

“Police have already identified several suspects linked to underworld groups, and continuous action is being taken against them,” he said.

Although several major criminals had been arrested and their activities curtailed in the past, shootings and murders had again been reported in some areas, he said.

“Police have formulated comprehensive plans to control all these groups and identify their criminal backgrounds. It is not easy to immediately eradicate underworld groups that have been operating in an organised manner for a long period. It will take some time,” he said.

However, he expressed confidence that the situation could be brought fully under control soon, as the police and other security agencies were working together with commitment.

He also said an unprecedented quantity of narcotics had been seized by police during the past two to three years, while a large number of suspects linked to drug trafficking and organised criminal groups had also been arrested.
