The main opposition, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), announced that a decision on submitting a no-confidence motion against Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne will be made by next weekend.

Opposition Chief Whip, MP Kayanta Karunathilaka, said many MPs have urged for the motion, citing loss of confidence in the Speaker.

Earlier, SJB’s General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara had warned that a no-confidence motion would be brought if the Speaker failed to protect opposition rights.

The controversy arose after the Speaker’s ruling on a no-confidence motion against State Defence Minister (Retd) Major General Arun Jayasekara.

Opposition members strongly protested and demanded access to reports from the Attorney General and the Secretary-General of Parliament, which were used for the ruling.

It was eventually announced that opposition MPs who filed the no-confidence motion could view the reports at the Speaker’s office.
