No Bus Fare Reduction Despite Fuel Price Cut – Transport Commission
03-Sep-2025.
The National Transport Commission announced that bus fares cannot be reduced despite the recent monthly fuel price cut. Similarly, the All Island Three-Wheeler Drivers’ Association stated that three-wheeler fares will also remain unchanged.
As of midnight on on August 31, the prices of Octane 92 petrol, diesel, and super diesel were reduced by 6, 6, and 12 rupees respectively.
Gemunu Wijeratne, President of the All Island Private Bus Owners’ Association, said that bus fares cannot be reduced unless diesel prices drop by at least 25 rupees. He noted that the last annual revision was carried out in July.
Meanwhile, Lalith Dharmasekara, President of the Three-Wheeler Owners’ Association, said that even if petrol was provided free of charge, fares would not be reduced, since the government has no proper policy framework for monitoring three-wheeler fares.
