More Than 2,500 Kilograms of Narcotics Destroyed Over Three Years

More than 2,500 kilograms of narcotics seized during joint operations conducted by the Police and the Tri-Forces since 2024 have been destroyed following court proceedings, Police Media Spokesman F. U. Wootler stated.
He made these remarks at a press conference held in Colombo on Jan 2.
He said that large-scale operations are being conducted by the Police, Armed Forces, and Special Task Force to bring drug traffickers, who pose a major threat to Sri Lanka and its citizens, before the law. A formal procedure is followed to destroy narcotics taken into police custody.
Accordingly, a total of 2,556 kilograms and 164 grams of narcotics seized between 2024 and 2026 have been destroyed. This includes 1,894 kilograms and 512 grams destroyed in 2024 and 494 kilograms and 498 grams of heroin destroyed in 2025.
As part of initial operations in 2026, 170 kilograms and 86 grams of heroin and 306 grams of opium were incinerated on 02 January 2026 at high-temperature modern incinerators in Wanathavilluwa. All destruction operations were carried out under the direct supervision of the courts, the Government Analyst’s Department, and the Police Narcotics Bureau.
