Mobile phone dealers given one month to obtain licences

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission has reactivated its Special Investigation Unit, which had remained temporarily suspended since 2022. Director General Air Vice Marshal Bandula Herath said the unit will investigate financial and technical matters, with officers from the Criminal Investigation Department now attached to strengthen its operations.
The unit's priority will be to identify traders selling mobile phones without the required TRC licence and initiate legal action. However, unlicensed dealers will be granted a one-month grace period to obtain the necessary authorisation.
The Director General said consumers purchasing mobile phones from unlicensed retail outlets would do so at their own risk, as the Commission would not be responsible for issues relating to service connectivity or warranty protection.
