Katchatheevu row in TN Assembly; TVK blames Karunanidhi

The 285-acre Katchatheevu island, ceded to Sri Lanka in 1974, reignited political controversy in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. The ruling TVK blamed then Chief Minister Karunanidhi for not opposing the transfer, while the DMK countered that it was a central government decision opposed by the party. 

Congress defended the deal citing India’s gain of the 25-lakh-acre Wadge Bank. DMK accused TVK of politicizing the issue for optics, urging balanced representation in Assembly debates. Fishermen’s hardships and sovereignty concerns remain central themes.
