JVP set fire to public property: Champika Ranawaka

The arrest of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe under the Public Property Act by the People’s Liberation Front for destruction and arson of public property is a historically absurd act. We will overcome all authority conflicts with the Constitution, said Pattali Champika Ranawaka, leader of the United Republican Front and former Member of Parliament.

He made this statement during a media briefing with opposition parties held in Colombo on August 24.

He further stated: “Several allegations have been filed against the ministers and deputy ministers of this government. Yet, no action has been taken against them. Not even a summons has been issued.
Allegations were made against the President regarding the release of stockpiled goods from customs, based on his role as Finance Minister. The audit committee appointed by the President recommended investigating this matter.
It is evident that direct political retaliation is taking place, despite the principle that all are equal before the law. Since assuming office, the President has undertaken multiple foreign trips, and invitations extended to organizations were accommodated.
Using public funds for the personal travel of the President and Prime Minister, and the arrest of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe under the Public Property Act by the People’s Liberation Front for destruction of property, is a historically ridiculous action. We will overcome all authority conflicts with the Constitution.”
