The Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) has announced that it will launch continuous protests against the implementation of the Kivul Oya project proposed by the government led by President Anura Kumara.

In a media statement issued by the party’s Acting General Secretary, it was stated that the Cabinet approved the above-mentioned Mahaweli project on Jan 20.

The statement noted that ITAK Member of Parliament Dr. S. Sathyalingam clearly explained in Parliament on 21 January how the project would alter demographic patterns and the extent to which it would affect the rights of the Tamil people.

The party announced that large-scale protest campaigns would be organised to prevent the implementation of the project and called on other political parties and the public to join these protests.

It was further stated that discussions on the issue would be held in Vavuniya in the coming days, and all concerned parties were invited to participate, share their views, and strengthen the protest movement.
