ITAK MP Given One Week to Resign from Constitutional Council
13-Jan-2026.
ITAK Parliamentary Group Leader S. Sritharan has been given one week to resign from the Constitutional Council following a decision by the party’s Political Council.
ITAK General Secretary M. A. Sumanthiran has sent a letter dated January 7, requesting Sritharan’s resignation, stating that his continued membership in the Council is causing embarrassment to both himself and the party.
The decision follows discussions at the ITAK Political Council meeting held in Vavuniya on January 3, where concerns were raised over Sritharan voting alongside the government on eight appointments, including those related to the Acting President of the Court of Appeal, members of the Office for Reparations, the Auditor General, and the Police Commission.
Some of the appointees were reportedly former officials of the military and Ministry of Defence.
The party concluded that his conduct warranted resignation from the Constitutional Council, leading to the formal request for his departure within one week of receiving the letter.
