Government Intends to Establish a Truth and Reconciliation Commission

The government is reportedly preparing to establish a Truth and Reconciliation Commission and is considering consolidating all offices related to accountability and reconciliation under a single institutional structure.

Although the previous government had explored establishing such a commission, the current National People’s Power administration has not yet taken concrete steps in this regard.

Dr. Jehan Perera, Director of the National Peace Council and civil activist, stated that a knowledgeable source informed him of ongoing discussions to bring together the Office on Missing Persons, the Office for Reparations, and the Office for National Unity and Reconciliation under one umbrella institution.

He emphasized that if all these accountability and reconciliation structures are brought under one entity, their independence must be preserved.
