Tamil National People’s Front Parliamentarian Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam stated that although Thissa Viharaya has been illegally constructed on privately owned land in Thyiddy and legal action must be taken against it, there has been no attempt to incite the public to demolish it or to take the law into their own hands.

He made these remarks at a media briefing held on Dec 30 at his residence in Colombo, organised to clarify discussions held earlier this month by members of the Tamil National Council with Tamil Nadu political leaders regarding a federal political solution for Tamil people.

Responding to questions on claims made by MP Ramanathan Archuna that certain groups were inciting people to enter and damage Thissa Viharaya on Jan 3, and that MPs Gajendrakumar and Sritharan were engaging in ethnic politics, Gajendrakumar reiterated his position.

He stressed that there is no doubt the Viharaya was illegally constructed on privately owned land, but categorically denied calling for public action or unlawful conduct.

He further pointed out that the landowners possess valid title deeds and insisted that legal action should be taken to remove the Viharaya through due process.
